1958 Wildcats...Looking Back

These 1958 Wildcat State Finalists have found their place in life through hard work, pride in their heritage and acceptance of the world as it advances technically and socially...and they have succeeded against all odds.

C. ED DAVIS. B.A, Austin College; M.A. Duke University; Ph.D., The University of Texas at Austin; J.D. The University of Texas School of Law. Married Bertha Morris of Round Rock in 1984. Three daughters and five grandchildren between them. Faculty member at Southwestern University, Assistant Texas Attorney General, Assistant Texas Secretary of State and general counsel for two large state agencies. Retired from the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services in 2004. Now lives in Georgetown and continues his support for abused and neglected children by serving as board president of Texas CASA, Inc.

GAYLAND JOSEPHSON. Undergraduate degree from Texas Lutheran College. Served in the Peace Corps in El Salvador for two years. Received masters in history in 1978 after going to Trinity University, University of Colorado and Pan American University. Has been teaching for 40 years - retired five years ago, but rehired because of a teacher shortage. Has taught in Denver, San Antonio and Edinburg. Now teaches the dual enrollment classes at Edinburg High School where the students get college credit through South Texas College. Will retire when he no longer can enjoy teaching. Travels during the summers with friends to places like Alaska, Hawaii and Nova Scotia. Now resides in McAllen, is divorced and has a daughter in Austin and a son in New York. Provides several scholarships to students in town in El Salvador where he served in Peace Corps.

DAVID GIBBONS. Married Patricia Freeman of Roan Mountain, Tennessee, in 1964. Worked for the U.S. Public Health Service, the Army and the Navy and retired in 2000 after 37 years of federal civil service. They have three children. Now resides in Diamondhead, MS and spends time (not enough) with four grandchildren, doing volunteer work and playing golf.

RAY LIMAS. Went into the service in 1963 and got out in 1967. Joined the Los Angeles Police Department in 1968 and after 28 years grew tired of dealing with the bad guys and retired in 1996. Still lives in California and plays golf twice a week; would play more if body would cooperate.

OSCAR SANCHEZ. In 1960 joined the U S Marines for four years. Married in Los Angeles in 1971. Retired in 1995 from Northrop Aircraft after 30 years. Has two daughters and two grandchildren who live in California. Moved to Pflugerville in 2006. Practices or plays golf most of the time.

WILLIE RAY SMITH. Joined U.S. Marine Corps and served four years. Became an Austin firefighter; didn't care for firefighting and moved to Greenville and worked for White's Boiler and Piping Works. Married Occie Irene Blaylock in 1966. Has four stepsons. The boys requested their last name be changed to Smith which was done. In 1970 Willie was working on a giant storage vat and fell from a ladder and was killed. He was only 29. He is buried in Greenville.

TRAVIS LEE ROBERTS. Married to Cindy Roberts. They have six children and six grandchildren and live in Tunnel Hill, GA with their Collie, cat, donkey and 2 sheep on their small farm. Owned a commercial mortgage banking company for most of his adult life and is now a published author of nine Christian books. Making plans to start a publishing company that will specialize in Christian books. The name of the publishing company is expected to be Nehemiah Books.

FELIPE (PHILIP) VILLARREAL. Joined Marine Corps upon graduating; spent four years in the Corps. Married Annie Pacheco of Houston during that time. Moved to Houston in 1962 and established a graphics company. Is still working. Has 10 grandchildren.

PERRY McVAY. Finished Elgin High School and went into banking. Moved from Houston back to Elgin in the 1990s and worked for a branch office of Elgin Bank in Pflugerville. Died Jan. 27, 2005 and is buried in the Youngs Prairie Cemetery.

KAY KEMP. Information obtained from Kay's brother, Marcy, indicates that Kay lives in Hayward, California and his wife is in a nursing home.

HARRY KRENEK, B.A. Howard Payne University, M. A. Southwest Texas State University, Ph.D. Texas Tech University. Married Marsha Stark in 1967. They have two sons and two grandchildren. Retired in 2001 from the presidency of Western Texas College in Snyder. Currently living on Copano Bay near Rockport/Fulton and teaching at Del Mar College and Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi.

JOHNNY MACK MOORE. Joined the United States Marine Corps in 1960 and was honorably discharged in 1963. As a heavy equipment operator, he helped build Decker Lake and had a long career in construction. He lived in Elgin with his wife and two children. In May of 1996 he suffered a stroke and in 1997 he suffered from kidney failure and had to go on dialysis. He died in 2001.

VICTOR DUBE. Graduated from The University of Texas with a BS in Mechanical Engineering and from Marquette University with a MS in Engineering. Worked for Tracor in Austin for 20 years, went into the engineering consulting and manufacturing business in 1990 servicing the Aerospace industry. Plans to continue working as long as it is fun. Married Judith Schroeder and blessed with three children and four grandchildren. Judith taught at Elgin Primary School for 20 years and is now retired. All three children are graduates of Elgin High and are engineers working in Austin.

DON JOSEPHSON. Attended Texas Lutheran in Seguin on a football and baseball scholarship; finished in four years and moved to San Antonio. Coached football for 10 years at the high school level. Married Gail Bullock in 1965; have two children and four grandchildren. Has been in the insurance business since 1975. Currently is a Regional Sales Manager with Ameritas and covers the South Texas region in the school district market providing employee benefits.

BARRY WADE ELLIS. At-tended Howard Payne College one year on football scholarship, injured knee that year and decided not to continue football and transferred to University of Texas and graduated in 1966 with a BS in Civil Engineering. Married Frances Storey in 1963 and after graduation moved to Houston and worked for an Engineering Consulting firm. Second career was in real estate development for approximately 20 years. Currently a Senior Financial Advisor, CFP, CRPC with Ellis & Ellis, a financial advisory practice of Ameriprise Financial Services in a partnership with son in The Woodlands. Has resided in the Houston area (now Magnolia) since graduation except for 7 years in Northwest Arkansas. Has three children and five grandchildren.

HERMES PAYNE. Went to University of Arkansas to play football. Stayed two years, hated every minute of it and went back to Austin. BBA from University of Texas at Austin, '64, active duty with US Army, 1965 married Marilyn Rouse and they have two sons. 1966 finished reserve officer obligation, left the Army and joined Hartford Insurance Group as a sales representative. 1968 left the Hartford to join one of his agents, Gans & Smith Insurance Agency Inc. in Longview. Thought it would be a great place to raise a family and it was. 1995 named president of the agency and still working. He has great "partners," After 41 years, he's sort of taking retirement in pieces.

CHARLES F. BOETTCHER. B.S., Sam Houston State University. Married Beth Hetherington from Marlin in 1964, have two children and seven grandchildren. Moved to East Bernard after college where he continues to farm, ranch and manage waterfowl habitat on their land. Still likes to hunt and fish and spend much time attending grandchildren's school and sports events. He goes elk hunting in Colorado annually and delighted in having visited his German and Swedish grandparents' birthplaces in Germany and Sweden.

GUY WOLF. After graduation, attended Nixon Clay Business College, went to work for Sherwin-Williams in 1960 and after 37 years, retired in December 1997 as district manager of South Texas. During his career, lived in Austin, Houston, Shreveport, Kansas City and Corpus Christi. Married to Carol and they have four children, 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. They live in Bandera County, stay busy with grandkids, playing golf and traveling as much as possible.

BYRON A. LAX. BBA, University of Texas. Certified Public Accountant (retired). Spent early professional career as a partner in an international accounting firm. Was CFO of two publicly-held companies and CEO of another. Finished career in 1995 as a founding partner of Lax, Boston & Ellis, a firm that provided consultation services for business combinations. Avid golfer (8 handicap) and singer, as a member of Schola Cantorum of Texas, a semi-professional choral group based in Ft. Worth. He works 20 hours a week at a local Golfsmith, selling golf clubs to keep competitive juices flowing. Married to Phyllis for 40 years. Two sons, two daughters, four grandchildren.

DANNY JOE RHODES. Worked in various areas including insurance, managing convenience stores and the last 14 years with Syncro Vac in Elgin. Now retired and lives in Elgin. Has two daughters.

GENE HENZE: Worked with various professions in the Austin area. Worked with plumbing and air conditioning duct work, at Texas Nuclear in Production Control, with an oil company in field control and Syncro Vac in materials control. Has four daughters, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He and his wife Margaret live in Elgin and has been retired for the last three years.

CLAYTON DAUGHTRY. BSME The University of Texas at Austin. Still working as Senior Manager, Business Development for Advanced Missile Programs, Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control-Dallas, Texas. Met Melva McFarland, while in graduate school and married in Dallas in 1965. Melva retired from her private CPA practice in 1993. Parents of two children and have five grandchildren. Clayton has been in aerospace for 42 years with assignments in mechanical systems design, systems test and evaluation and now in the development of advanced missile programs in the specific area of missile defense systems. Grandchildren are wonderful. Retirement next year? Part time as a consultant is a possibility. Clayton said "my jersey number was 63. Some things you do not forget."

ARTHUR HENZE. Spent three years in the U.S. Army. Worked at various places in Elgin and Houston. Then worked almost 29 years with the City of Austin Power and Light. Was very active as Boy Scout leader for many years and enjoyed many miles of backpacking. Has a daughter by first marriage and a son by the second marriage. Delights in five grandchildren, still works with Boy Scouts and active in the men's work at his church. He and his wife Joyce are retired and live in Elgin.

KEN DAUGHTRY. Worked with savings and loan organizations and banks, including tenure as president of Security National Bank. Then went into the real estate business in Elgin for 18 years. Very civic minded, served on Elgin ISD School Board for 12 years and was president of Board for nine years, then served as Mayor of Elgin for two terms. Married Beverly Almquist Williams in 1979 and now serves as Beverly's photographer as she is the publisher/editor of the Elgin Courier. Beverly and Kenny have 4 children between them, 7 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Does not believe in slowing down, works constantly in restoring houses around Elgin and condos at Port Aransas.

BOYD HENRY. BS in Physi-cal Education from University of Texas. Went into coaching at Bellville, Elgin and Bastrop. Married Vicky Rabensburg in 1969. Took time off from coaching and went into public sector. Went back into coaching at the elementary level at Bastrop and retired after 30 years at Bastrop. Has two children, Dr. Brooks Anderson, a pediatrician and Jacob Henry, a mechanical engineer. No grandchildren. Worked with a homebuilder until retirement. Lives in Bastrop.

RUDY RAMIREZ. Went to barber school after graduation, then worked building school buses. Employed by Elgin Police Department until he went into construction and paving business. Retired in 1999. Married Tina Jiminez in 1963 and has three sons and two grandchildren. Lives in Elgin.

SAM JONSE. Worked at Tracor in Austin for many years. Jonse lived in Manor and died of cancer in 2003.

THE CHEERLEADERS

KARIN LUNDGREN. Grad-uated from Southwest Texas State with a B.S. in Education. Taught elementary school and worked with community education for 29 years. Married to Bob Barker and they are the parents of two children and three grandchildren. They are retired in Elgin and are enjoying traveling, volunteering and spoiling grandchildren!.

MARY JO ROMINE. Married Eugene Preece of Manor in 1959. Worked in various state agencies and retired from the State Health Department in 2000. Children are Dr. Stan Preece and Tim Preece. Now reside in Leander and spends as much time as possible with four grandchildren.

MARJORIE WILSON. Mar-ried Leonard Snyder in October 1961. Enjoyed 20 or so years as a Navy Nurse. Has worked as a Registered Nurse on the east and west coast and in Guam. Has traveled to several continents and lived in Hawaii in the 60s. They are enjoying their retirement and travel in their motor home. Lives in Bastrop County not far from Elgin! Has one son, daughter-in-law and a granddaughter.

DELORES HAVERLAND. Married Leonard Wenzel from Manor on July 4, 1959. Involved in 4-H work, church, Little League baseball, Meals on Wheels and helps make Braille Bibles for her church. Mother of four daughters and has 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Lives in Georgetown.

CARL COLE. Went to work for Sherwin-Williams immediately after finishing Elgin High School. Stayed with them for 11 years. Left and started own businesses (CenTex Decorating Center, International Decorating Center and CenTex Sales). Sold businesses in 2004. One daughter by first marriage. Married Lola 30 years ago and Lola had 2 children. Retired to McDade/Paige area five years ago. Together have six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

DAVID HOUSE. Finished Elgin High School and went to A&M where he was in the corps and band. Then went into Air Force and served four years. Then went into the car sales area and has worked for dealerships until he retired in January, 2008. Has two children by first marriage and two by second marriage. He and Tina just celebrated their silver wedding anniversary. They have three grandchildren.

THE TWIRLERS

VIRGINIA COTTINGHAM. After graduation from EHS, went to work in Austin and spent the majority of her working life with the DPS and in the banking industry. During this period she found time to raise two sons. She and her husband, Lloyd Monson, are retired and live on the outskirts of Elgin.

PAULA IVEY. Graduated from the University of Texas and married Dan Ryan from Houston. Paula considered that her four children and nine grandchildren were her greatest accomplishments of life. Paula died of cancer in January 2008 and is buried in Alabama.

JUDY DAVIS. Graduated from Howard Payne College and moved to Dallas where she worked for a major international airline and then became part owner of a South American tour company. After over 30 years of flying all over the world, Judy retired back to Elgin in 2001 where she stays active with a part-time job with the Texas Police Chiefs Association and volunteer work.
