AUSTIN – Elgin High School and sister program Phoenix High School seniors tossed their caps into the air at Shoreline Church in Austin to signify graduation. The ceremony included speeches from students and staff members recognizing their accomplishments and fortitude.

As the effects of COVID19 resulted in only one full year of traditional in-person schooling, the class of 2023 graduates finished with a greater sense of camaraderie and compassion said faculty members.

“They remember what it was like sitting alone in their room talking to a computer, so I think that when they came back together, they made an unconscious decision, that became conscious, to tether themselves to each other and support each other all the way to the end,” said Kristy Birch, EHS teacher.

Birch, retiring this year, felt this kindness firsthand as she was hugged by each of her students on their way out.

There was a shared sentiment of resilience and adaptivity expressed through staff and students alike.

“We were resilient in the face of adversity,” salutatorian Blaine Mueller said in his graduation address.

Teacher Sam Long adds, “It wasn’t an easy start, but here we are.”

With a few inspirational Taylor Swift quotes, valedictorian Bieryn Elliott encouraged her classmates to continue this aptitude and be a model for future generations of Elgin students.

Along with honoring magna cum laude and summa cum laude pupils, the highest academic performers, principal Ricardo Reyes praised those who’ve finished different trade industry certifications through Elgin Independent School District courses. Commander Armstrong followed by having those who’ve enlisted to serve their country, stand up and be recognized.

Dr. Arthur Martinez, former assistant principal of EHS and current principal of Neidig Elementary School, read the names of the graduates to deafening applause. Attendees noted a bigger presence of airhorns and cowbells this year around, with the church seating hundreds of proud family members and friends.

With a celebratory toss of their caps, Elgin’s class of 2023 brought a wrap to the ceremony and their high school careers.
