With the conclusion of the UIL softball season over the weekend, the Elgin High School varsity softball team recently announced the 23-5A All-District team winners with plenty of Lady Wildcats represented.

The highest honor for Elgin went to junior shortstop Jaylan Roberson, who was named the 23-5A District Defensive Most Valuable Player for the 2023 season. In addition to her reliability on defense, Roberson was a vital part of the Lady Wildcats’ success on offense as she batted .337 with 35 hits, a team-high 41 runs scored, 15 stolen bases, 22 runs batted in, and four home runs on the year.

Elgin’s duo of senior Paiton Altmiller and junior Jessica Cantrell were picked as first-team all-district selections.

Cantrell did it all for the Lady Wildcats in 2023 as she had an astounding 281 strikeouts in 141.2 innings pitched with just a 1.24 earned run average as the team’s ace. She also was elite at the plate with a .418 batting average, 38 hits, 11 home runs, and 46 runs batted in.

Altmiller was very effective on offense as she batted .398 with 39 hits, 25 runs batted in, 14 runs scored, and 14 doubles. She also pitched 53.0 innings of relief in the circle with 39 strikeouts, a 2.77 earned run average, and just 11 walks issued.

Elgin senior Aubrey Gonzales and junior Camryn Davis were named second-team picks, while junior Danielle King, freshman Trinity Martinez, and freshman Bianca Galindo were all selected as honorable mentions.

Under head coach Pete Moreno, the Lady Wildcats finished the 2023 campaign with a 23-12 overall record with an 11-3 mark in 5A-23 play. After a 14-2 bi-district victory over Austin Crockett High School, Elgin was eliminated from playoff contention in the area round by the No. 1 ranked softball team in the nation Montgomery Lake Creek High School.
