The Elgin Lady Wildcats soccer team is undefeated, and the boys team tallied multiple wins last week.

The girls team reeled off three straight wins at the Giddings tournament after crushing Manor earlier in the week. The Lady Wildcats were stellar on both ends of the field, outscoring the competition 14-0 between the four contests.

On Tuesday, Jan. 10, the Elgin girls took a commanding first half lead in an away matchup versus the Manor Mustangs. Kailyn Cook found the back of the net twice. Dory Estrada and Joy Segura each scored a goal as well. In the second half, the Lady Wildcats controlled the ball and held firm on defense, securing a 4-0 victory.

To kick off the Giddings tournament, the Wildcats steamrolled the Sweeny Bulldogs by a score of 5-0. Maria Yanez was sensational, scoring three goals to lead the team. Cook and Estrada once again showcased their offensive prowess as they each tallied a goal. Estrada also had two assists in the contest.

Next up, Elgin battled the Bellville Brahmas in a lower scoring affair. The Lady Wildcats did just enough, though. Yanez and Cook each scored. Segura came up with the assist for both goals, and Elgin won 2-0.

The Lady Wildcats took on the Sealy Tigers to close out the tournament. Estrada had a monster performance, scoring three goals en route to a 3-0 victory. Goalkeeper Juliet Almazan and defenders such as Bela Estrada, Tory McDonald, Isabella Montemayor and Abby Muñoz also deserve praise for their dominant stretch of games.

The Lady Wildcats are now 5-0 to start the season. Estrada currently leads the team with six goals, and Cook is right behind her with five goals.

The boys team went 2-1-1 in last week’s games and have shown steady improvement.

On Jan. 10, The Wildcats thumped Bellville, 5-1, on their home field. Later in the week, the Elgin boys competed in the Copa Akins tournament in Austin.

In their first tournament matchup against the Leander Lions, the Wildcats trailed 2-0 for the majority of the contest, but they continued to fight. Elgin finally got on the board when Guillermo Hernandez booted a beautiful shot off the top crossbar for the goal.

Leander tried to play keep away and control possession while the clock ticked down, but the Wildcats’ aggressive defense gave them more opportunities on the offensive end. Raul Flores-Mujica then found the back of the net towards the end of regulation for the tying goal. The final score was 2-2.

On the following afternoon, the Wildcats were defeated, 2-1, by the Akins Eagles. However, the Wildcats finished the tournament on a high-note, edging past the Ellison Eagles by a score of 2-1. The Wildcats are now 2-2-2 this season.

The Elgin boys are scheduled to face Manor New Tech and Giddings this week. Meanwhile, the girls team will aim to keep their winning streak alive as they compete in another tournament.
