David Stephen Hodges

Our Lord and Savior called David Stephen Hodges, of Lexington, home June 4, 2023.

David had 52 love filled years with his wife Ann, raised two children in the Texas Hill Country. Though he had a “small” family, he had many friends that he considered family, so that made him rich in life.

He was famous among his family and friends for his “Breakfast Sandwiches.” You would be lucky if he brought you one to work. 

After graduating from Johnston High School in Austin, he was drafted by the United States Army where he served two years in Germany during the Vietnam War. He continued his service in the Texas Army National Guard for an additional eight years. David was a second-generation Lineman (the real kind that kept the lights on). He retired from Austin Energy after 27 years in June 1999.

To his grandkids, he was Papaw, always finding mischief to get into when Grandma wasn’t watching. When he retired, he had his cows and the land to keep him busy. To his friends and family, he was the “Greatest Storyteller of All Time.” He could spin a tale that would have everyone laughing. The stories always seemed to get more outlandish from time-to-time or perhaps just “that good.” 

Always a practical joker with everyone, he gave as good as he got, which was the only way he wanted it. He’s in heaven sitting in a green pasture watching cows graze and watching over all of us now; smiling at all the love that filled his life.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Kirby Hodges and Ruth Grady; siblings, Judy, Jackie, Jodi, and John Hodges; and his father-in-law, Earl Perry.

David is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ann Perry Hodges; children, David Wayne Hodges (Cindy Sanchez Hodges) and Jennifer Hodges Zavala; grandchildren, Clayton Trey Hodges, and Alexandria Ann Hodges; adopted mother, Lucille Hodges Copeland; and sister, Karla "Jan" Hodges. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Norma Perry; brothers-in-law, Rick (Robin) Perry and James (Sharon) Perry; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins on both the Hodges and Perry side.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, June 20, at 10:30 a.m. at Providence-Jones Family Funeral Home in Elgin.
