Elgin’s annual celebration of swine returns with three full evenings of entertainment, competition and neighborly communion.

Spearheaded by the City of Elgin Main Street Program, the Hogeye Festival draws in county-wide visitors to the “sausage capital of Texas,” as it is proudly stated on Elgin’s welcoming sign.

The free, pink-colored affair kicks off with the Hogeye Stroll on Oct. 26, from 5-9 p.m., leading attendees down Main Street through the array of local craft vendors and artists.

Those looking to stretch their vocal cords can enter the Hog Calling Contest at 6 p.m., hosted by Smash Daddies food truck. Registration begins at 5 p.m. in the Veterans’ Memorial Park’s farmers market, with prizes awarded for the cutest call, loudest call and overall best call. The donation based entry fees will be going to the Smash for Emergency Fund.

The Hogalicious Dessert Contest follows suit, organized by Firewild Events & Catering, with registration and judging at 6 and 7 p.m. Youth, adult and commercial bakers have their own divisions for both pies and cakes, with a chance to show their creativity through treats. Samples will be available after the winners are crowned.

Closing out the first day is the Pearls Before Swine Art Show at the Clever Tiger studio. A silent auction for pieces will see proceeds going to the Pearls Before Swine Scholarship Fund, awarded to graduating seniors pursuing further education in the arts.

Food and vendors continue through Oct. 27 with the Street Dance, live music performances begin at 8 p.m.

The event culminates on Saturday, Oct. 28, a full day of added festivities.

Hogeye staples return, including a brick throwing competition, cow patty bingo, car show, art show, cornhole tournament and the children’s costume and pet parade.

The signature Barbecue Pork Cook-off also showcases some of the best behind- the-grill talent that the area has to offer.

Elgin’s Hogeye Festival has continuously been one of the biggest days of the year for the city, ready to fill the historic downtown streets once more.
