Jana and Larry Nance’s home at 807 N. Ave. C has been named October’s Yard of the Month by the Elgin Garden Club.

Purchased in 2013 and framed by a striking white picket fence, its current plantings complement this historic home. Onlookers can hardly tell that the house had to be taken down to the studs on the inside, club members said.

After much work, the couple is reaping the fruits of their labor from the trees, bushes and perennial plants collected over the years, creating a welcoming outdoor space.

This year continues to be an exceptionally difficult one for gardeners. The drought and triple-digit summer days have added to the damaged trees and fallen limbs from Storm Mara. Luckily, the old crepe myrtles on the road survived, and blooming desert willow trees are proof that positive xeriscape pays off. The three-foot-high lantana still attracts butterflies, as do the purple salvia in the side yard.

“The resilience of the home built in 1902 is matched with the couple’s divine taste, as we all look forward to the cooling of fall and perhaps spring, when the white covered bridal veil plant begins to flower,” added club member Debbie Wahrmund.

A nonprofit organization, the Elgin Garden Club meets the first Tuesday of every month at the Grace Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, 11th Street and U.S. Highway 290.

Visitors and new members are welcome, starting at 9:30 a.m. with a meet and greet, plant exchange and refreshments, followed by a program.
