In cooperation with Elgin Independent School District employees, the Elgin Police Department responded to a threat being circulated over social media Oct. 10.
The threat specifically named Elgin Intermediate School and insinuated that violence would occur on campus.
The police department immediately initiated a criminal investigation.
Working with the school district, additional staff and police officers were deployed to the campus Oct. 11.
At approximately 9 a.m., a possible suspect was identified and located.
Through further investigation, it was confirmed that the juvenile suspect was the sole person responsible for the threats.
The suspect was taken into custody and charged with terroristic threat, a Class A misdemeanor.
In Texas, Class A misdemeanors are punishable by up to one year in jail, a fine of up to $4,000, or both.
Subsequently, the suspect was transported to the Bastrop County Juvenile Probation facility.
No weapons were found, and it’s believed there is no further threat to the student body or the public.
EPD will not be providing further updates regarding this incident.
