MANOR — The Elgin High School boys varsity soccer team under Head Coach Eduardo Lerma continued its start to the 2024 season last week as the Wildcats competed at the Manor Showcase tournament against Klein Collins High School, Needville High School and Gonzales The Wildcats lost 2-0 in the tourney opener to 6A Klein Collins and then were edged 2-1 by Needville with junior Teo Ferrusca scoring the lone goal for Elgin.
“We are playing tougher competition than usual this season to help us battle the gauntlet of a district that we are in,” Lerma said. “In the Manor Showcase, I saw that our passing is at par with playoff teams like Needville and 6As in Klein Collins but we just need to be confident in our skills to put it on the back of the net.”
The Elgin boys put it together in the tournament finale against Gonzales as the Wildcats cruised to a 3-0 shutout win over the Apaches as Ferrusca, junior Diego Zuniga and freshman Bryan Castelan each scored for the Wildcats.
“We are looking forward to tougher competition and we are looking to peak when district play begins. We decided to change our pace and rely on our good passing instead of our speed to put our players in opportunities to score,” Lerma said.
After Elgin has a non-district road match Tuesday at Del Valle High School, the Wildcats (1-3 overall record) will compete Jan. 11-13 at the Copa Akins tournament and take on Cedar Park Vista Ridge High School, Pflugerville Weiss High School and Austin High School.
