The Elgin High School boys varsity basketball team put a halt to their previous three-game losing streak Friday, Jan. 12 as the Wildcats surged to a 55-31 victory at home against district foe Bastrop High School.
The Wildcats went blow-for-blow with the visiting Bears in the first half but Elgin trailed Bastrop 19-18 by halftime. However, the Elgin offense got things going in the third quarter as the Wildcats took a 40-27 lead and were able to keep the Bears at bay the rest of the way.
Elgin was led on the night by senior Nathen Lewis as he had 20 points with a trio of three-pointers, seven rebounds and four steals while junior Marcus Hickman had 13 points with a trio of treys, four assists and three rebounds.
Wildcats sophomore Tyson McFarlin also scored in double figures with 10 points on a trio of three-pointers, three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Elgin junior Jonathan Richard also was a major factor on defense in the victory as he had a team-high 11 rebounds, three points, three assists and two steals against Bastrop.
With the victory, the Wildcats improved to 14-5 overall and have a 2-3 mark in the loaded 5A-District 23 standings while the Bears dropped to 4-16 overall and 0-5 in the district.
Following a scheduled district home game Jan. 17 versus Pflugerville High School, the Wildcats will then travel Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. to take on Pflugerville Hendrickson High School. The dates and start times of this week’s games are subject to change because of the winter weather.
There is currently a three-way tie for the No. 4 seed in the district with Elgin, Pflugerville and Cedar Creek High School each with a 2-3 record in district heading into this week’s games. Georgetown High School has a perfect 5-0 record in the district, while Hendrickson and Pflugerville Connally High School are each 4-1.
