The Elgin High School girls varsity basketball team under Head Coach Chris Tibbets picked up its first pair of 5A-District 23 wins this past week.

The Lady Wildcats were at home Jan. 9 and crushed Cedar Creek High School 47-17 and went on the road Saturday, Jan. 13 and won a 35-32 defensive battle against Bastrop High School.

Elgin locked in all game against Cedar Creek and did not allow the visiting Lady Eagles to get much of anything going on offense. The Lady Wildcats got a spark with a double-double effort from senior Jaylan Roberson with a game-high 14 points to go along with 11 rebounds, while fellow senior Keera Williams also scored in double figures with 12 points and three steals. Elgin sophomore Trinity Martinez added six points with a pair of three-pointers made.

Cedar Creek has been without sophomore Keyaira Limuel Washington these last few games due to injury as the star for the Lady Eagles had been averaging 28.6 points, 9.1 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 2.1 blocked shots per game.

Against Bastrop, the Lady Wildcats again locked in on defense and were able to grind out a three-point victory over the Lady Bears. Elgin got 10 points from sophomore Sharmonique Williams, eight points from Martinez and six from Roberson.

Elgin (9-17 overall, 2-5 district record) will have its second slate of district play beginning on the road Jan. 17 with Pflugerville High School and then back on the road Friday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. against Pflugerville Hendrickson High School. This week’s games are subject to change in date and time because of the harsh winter weather.
