Elgin powerlifting thrives at Taylor meet

TAYLOR — The Elgin High School and Smithville High School varsity powerlifting teams traveled Saturday, Jan. 13 to the Taylor Duck Invitational meet held at Taylor High School with athletes competing in the squat, bench press and deadlift.

ELGIN WILDCATS

The Wildcats flexed their way to victory as the boys team had 42 points to edge Pflugerville Hendrickson High School. The Elgin boys had four lifters take home gold medals and two more with silver medals.

First-place finishers for the Wildcats were Gary Jefferson in the 148-pound class with 965 total pounds lifted, Omar Palacios in the 181-pound class with 1,145 pounds, Joe Stiggers in the 308-pound class with 1,125 and Drake McCoy in the super heavyweight class with 965.

Elgin also had second-place finishers as Jake Johnson in the 181-pound class lifted 1,115 total and Sebastian Monroy in the super heavyweight class lifted 910.

ELGIN LADY WILDCATS

The Lady Wildcats dominated with 59 points as a team and were 30 points higher than runner-up Pflugerville Hendrickson.

First-place finishers for the Lady Wildcats were Zoey Smith in the 105-pound class with 550 total pounds lifted, Elizabeth Nunez in the 114-pound class with 815, Maria Yanez in the 123-pound class with 870, Grace Hagen in the 198-pound class with 790, Jaliyah Price in the 220-pound class with 800 and defending state champion Nya Kirk Jones in the 242-and-over class with 1,305 total pounds lifted.

Second-place finishers for the Lady Wildcats were Jessica Dominguez in the 123-pound class with 640 total pounds lifted and Jordin Seeger in the 148-pound class with 875, while the Elgin girls also had third-place finishers as Meta Elliott in the 105-pound class had 460 total pounds lifted, Deysey Sanchez in the 123-pound class with 630 and Danielle King in the 148-pound class with 840.

SMITHVILLE TIGERS

The Tigers took home one gold medal and also had a trio earn silver medals. Caden Stockdale placed first for the Smithville boys in the 242-pound class with 1,470 total pounds lifted, while second-place finishers were Gilberto Jaimes in the 132-pound class with 815 total pounds lifted, Christian Osorio in the 148-pound class with 960 and Chris Borja in the 220-pound class with 1,330 total pounds lifted.

SMITHVILLE LADY TIGERS

The Lady Tigers had two lifters take home silver medals and three more win bronze. Second-place finishers for the Smithville girls were Elena Romero in the 97-pound class with 330 total pounds lifted and Emery Bayer in the 132-pound class with 590. Third-place finishers were Blythe Edwards in the 97-pound class with 330 total pounds lifted, Shantel Harlow in the 114-pound class with 580 and Trezser Anderson-Lovings in the 242-and-over class with 865.

Elgin will next host the Wildcat Invitational meet on Saturday, Jan. 27, with the Smithville boys and girls teams also scheduled to compete.
