SMITHVILLE — It was easy work Tuesday, Jan. 9 for the Smithville High School girls varsity basketball team as the Lady Tigers went on the road and cruised to a 54-5 win against the Lady Polar Bears of Austin Achieve High School.

The Lady Tigers were led by sophomore Sydnie Brenner as she scored in double figures with 16 points and had eight steals on defense. Fellow Smithville sophomore LaDonije Lewis had eight points to go along with three rebounds and three steals, while junior Chelsea Hendrix had six points and four steals of her own in the lopsided victory.

Smithville also remained on the road last Friday but was defeated 76-35 by 4A-District 22 frontrunner Taylor High School. The high-powered Lady Ducks have now won all six district games they’ve played by at least 25 points.

Following a scheduled game Jan. 17 at home versus Caldwell High School, the Lady Tigers (12-9 overall, 4-2 in district) will then remain home Friday at 6:15 p.m. as Smithville hosts La Grange High School. This will be a huge rivalry game that should play a large part in determining whether the Lady Tigers or Lady Leopards get the No. 2 seed out of the district for the upcoming playoffs.
