SMITHVILLE — The Smithville High School girls varsity basketball team competed in 4A-District 22 play this past week as the Lady Tigers hosted Caldwell High School and rival La Grange High School.

CALDWELL LADY HORNETS 48, SMITHVILLE LADY TIGERS 47

The Lady Tigers let one get away from them Jan. 17 as Smithville was edged 48-47 at home by the Caldwell Lady Hornets. Smithville got off to a great start with a 14-2 lead in the first quarter that grew to a 24-4 advantage in the second quarter. However, Caldwell came all the way back with a big run over the course of the third and fourth quarters to stun the Lady Tigers.

In the heartbreaking loss, the Lady Tigers got a solid all-around effort from sophomore LaDonije Lewis as she finished with a team-high 11 points, six rebounds, five steals, four rebounds and three blocked shots. Fellow sophomore Sydnie Brenner had eight points, four assists, three rebounds, three steals and one block while senior Avery Bezner added six points, five rebounds, three steals and one assist against Caldwell.

LA GRANGE LADY LEOPARDS 56, SMITHVILLE LADY TIGERS 52

Smithville was at home again Jan. 19 as the Lady Tigers came up just short with a 56-52 loss to La Grange despite a valiant rally in the fourth quarter. The Lady Tigers kept themselves within striking distance of the Lady Leopards in the first half but a big third quarter helped La Grange pull away to a 16-point lead.

LaDonije Lewis had a team-high 15 points to go along with seven rebounds and five steals, while senior Monica Lewis also scored in double figures with 13 points of her own.

Smithville (12-11 overall, 4-4 in district) under Head Coach Rachel Altman is scheduled Jan. 23 to host Manor New Tech High School and then travel Jan. 26 for a game against Giddings High School with major playoff seeding implications for both teams. In the first round of district games, the Lady Tigers dominated Manor New Tech 73-27 and edged Giddings 56-53.
