Thelma McLain Lawrence, age 84, entered into eternal rest Saturday, March 30, 2024. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, daughter, sister and grandmother. She was born Jan. 18, 1940, in Belzoni, Mississippi, to Curtis and Mae (Sumrall) McLain.

Thelma graduated from Gilfoy School of Nursing in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1961. As a young RN, she moved to Ft. Stockton, to gain experience working in a regional hospital.

It was there she met her husband of 53 years, Alfred Lawrence. She worked for many years as a public health nurse, where she was a dedicated and caring provider to all her patients. In retirement, she enjoyed traveling with her husband and building churches with The Texas Baptist Church Builders.

Thelma spent much of her time on job sites making quilts to donate to Project Linus, as young babies and children were always close to her heart.

She also cared deeply for the poor and hungry. She would often take meals and food supplies to various individuals and pantries, even setting one up in her garage for those in need.

She will be remembered as a very positive person and when asked by someone how she was doing, her reply was always the same, “I’m doing great, and I refuse to believe otherwise.”

Thelma was preceded in death by her parents, Curtis and Mae McLain; her brother, Lacy Mc-Lain; her sister, Margie Wise; as well as her husband of 53 years, Alfred Reid Lawrence; and her son, Samuel Reid Lawrence.

She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Lynn Andritsos and her husband George Andritsos; her brothers, Alvin “Buddy” McLain and Jerry McLain; and her most loved grandchildren, Sophia Anastasia Andritsos and Zoe Alexandra Andritsos. She is also survived by many extended family and friends to cherish and honor her memory. She will be dearly missed but never forgotten.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, April 13, at 10 a.m. at McDade Cemetery,1876 US-290 in McDade.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to The Mustard Seed Cafe in El Paso, or any charity of your choice.

Special thanks and gratitude to Dr. Andy Enriquez and Three Oaks Hospice, including Lizette, Jesus, Kim and Cynthia, and all of her caregivers for their endless compassion and support, especially Rosie, Carmen, Norma and Mary.
