Lady Wildcats continue surge

The Elgin High School varsity softball team continued its strong play in 5A-District 23 this past week as the Lady Wildcats routed Cedar Creek High School and Bastrop High School.

The Lady Wildcats scored early and often Thursday, April 11 in a dominant 13-3 victory at home over the Lady Eagles. Elgin scored four times in the first inning, went off for five more runs in the second frame and added two runs apiece in the fourth and fifth innings to put the run rule into effect against Cedar Creek.

Lady Wildcats senior Jessica Cantrell led the way with a team-high three runs batted in, while fellow seniors Mackenzie Farris and Danielle King drove in two runs each.

Elgin sophomore Bianca Galindo led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run, while senior Jaylan Roberson was 3-for-4 at the plate with a run driven in. Lady Wildcats senior Gabriella King and junior Gabriella Sandoval also knocked in one run apiece.

Cantrell struck out the side as she only pitched the first inning, while Gabriella Sandoval was in the circle for four innings and held the Lady Eagles in check with five strikeouts and only three hits allowed.

ELGIN LADY WILDCATS 10, BASTROP LADY BEARS 1 Elgin faced an early deficit and the offense came to life Friday, April 12 on the road in a big 10-1 win at Bastrop.

After the Lady Bears took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, the Lady Wildcats got going in the third frame with an RBI groundout by Roberson and a run-scoring single by Farris to take a 2-1 advantage.

The Lady Wildcats broke the game open in the fifth inning as Farris had another RBI single, later scored on an error and Gabriella Sandoval made it 7-1 on a run-scoring single. Roberson hit a two-run home run in the sixth frame followed by a solo shot by Cantrell to go up 10-1.

It was a dominant night in the circle for Cantrell as she pitched seven innings with 17 strikeouts, only two hits allowed and just two walks issued.

Elgin (17-7 overall, 10-2 district record), under Head Coach Pete Moreno, had senior night Tuesday hosting Pflugerville High School and will be on the road Friday, April 19 at 7 p.m. against Pflugerville Hendrickson High School.

Bastrop (14-12 overall, 6-6 district record), under Head Coach Teresa Morgan, continued district play Tuesday at rival Cedar Creek and will play host Friday at 7 p.m. to district frontrunner Georgetown High School.
