How old are you and what do you do?
I was a public school teacher for 27 years and am retired. I currently conduct school tours on our local farm. I am also on the Elgin ISD School Board and serve as vice president.
What sets you apart from the other candidates?
My educational background includes both a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas, Austin and a master’s degree from Michigan State University. Both of these degrees are in education. My teaching career includes kindergarten through college in various states. I also taught in the Philippines through a U.S. Department of Defense school.
Since moving to Elgin, I was director of the summer reading program at the Elgin Library for several years. This involved creating summer programs for preschool, elementary age and teens. I also served on the board of the Elgin Chamber of Commerce and held the office of chairman and treasurer. These experiences in Elgin prepared me to observe and experience the Elgin community and the needs of its citizens, particularly the youth.
If elected, what will be your main priority?
My main priority is to ensure our Elgin ISD students are receiving a quality education that prepares them for the future. To accomplish this, we must have an understanding of our district goals and the programs that are in place to reach those goals. At the same time, school board members need to make sure we have quality personnel to carry out these programs and last, but not least, we use our taxpayers’ monies wisely.
What is the biggest issue facing Elgin/Elgin ISD at the moment?
The biggest issue facing Elgin ISD at this time is the fast- paced growth we are experiencing and making sure we are in compliance with TEA and Legislative mandates. And, at the same time, making sure our students are receiving a safe and quality education. The current bond that is on the ballot will address part of the issue of the growth, but the board will need to think beyond just this year or the next. It is important we have a school board that is having conversations regarding the future growth and to begin solving the issues associated with that.
Why are you running?
I am running to continue overseeing the school district’s goals and making sure they are being implemented.
