Students get advanced math pathway

The district’s onboarding sixth graders will meet slight changes to their curriculum next year with updated advanced mathematics pathways.

Senate Bill 2124 and its corresponding laws that went into effect as part of the 88th Legislative Session will require Elgin Independent School District to automatically enroll select students in an advanced mathematics course for the 2024-25 school year.

“We’ve got some new information over the course of the last year or so that’s really caused us to take a look at our current pathways and mathematics,” Molley Perry, assistant superintendent of teaching and learning said.

The State Assessments of Academic Readiness and Measures of Academic Progress testing results will determine which students are to be placed in accelerated learning courses. The 60th percentile of STAAR and 30th percentile of MAP testers will automatically be enrolled.

The state includes an opt-out provision for parents who wish to remove their child from the automatic enrollment.

Alternatively, pupils that didn’t reach the top scores but are recommended by both parent and teacher can join the curriculum with administrator approval and supporting evidence.

“We ensure that not only we are compliant with these rules and these laws, but ensure that our students are receiving developmentally appropriate instruction that really does stretch them at their just right level,” Perry added.

Based on cur rent STAAR performance records, according to the district, more than half of Elgin ISD sixth graders are anticipated to be in the advanced mathematics pathways.

The sixth grade curriculum will include a gradelevel pathway and an advanced pathway with half of grade seven Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills teachings, leading to the grade six STAAR.

The changes will not impact grades seven or eight, but a work group will convene in the fall to evaluate its effect for future years, according to Perry.
