Another body recovered in river

BASTROP – The body of a Colorado River swimmer was recovered Wednesday morning, the third drowning-related death this season, according to the Bastrop Police Department.

Dispatchers responded to a water assist call July 3 around 11 a.m. after reports that an individual went under and had not resurfaced.

With assistance from the Lower Colorado River Authority and first responders, search and rescue efforts were successful in finding the deceased adult male just south of State Highway 71. No further details will be made available, according to reports.

This is the second body recovered from the Colorado River in the span of one month, the third this year.

The body of a latenight swimmer that went missing was found July 11 and a father reportedly drowned after saving his son struggling at Fisherman’s Park March 24.

Local swimmers describe the popular swimming spot as “surprisingly dangerous,” often deeper than expected with slippery moss-covered rocks and strong currents.

Authorities urge water safety precautions when swimming in Bastrop County’s rivers and lakes, suggesting life vests particularly when alcohol is involved.
