$1M bond set in lethal highway dispute

A $1 million bond has been set for a motorist charged with felony first-degree murder following a deadly highway shooting last week stemming from a roadside dispute, according to court documents.

Officers found the body of Joseph Stanczyk shortly after 7 p.m. July 16 when they responded to calls for a disturbance and shots fired near U.S 290 and County Line Road, according to the Elgin Police Department.

Fabian Salas, 34, remains in the Travis County Jail.

According to an affidavit, a witness saw a black GMC Sierra pickup and a blue Chevrolet Malibu driving westbound on 290, speeding and cutting off each other.

The two vehicles eventually came to a stop near the County Line intersection, investigators said.

Stanczyk got out of the Malibu and started towards the truck, according to the court documents. The other motorist stepped out of his vehicle and “physically engaged” with Stanczyk in the roadway, investigators said.

The witness told investigators the second man pulled out a handgun and shot Stanczyk in the head.

Officers found the assailant waiting at the scene when they arrived, according to reports.

The two men, both Elgin-area residents, did not appear to know each other, according to reports. The shooting occurred in the Travis County portion of Elgin, officials said.

Highway lanes blocked off during the probe reopened about 11:30 p.m.
