An organization set on maintaining landmark cemeteries around the area will be holding its annual gathering in Elgin next month.
The Evangelical Free Church Cemeteries Association will be meeting August 11 at the Elgin Evangelical Free Church, 1209 N. Avenue C., 3 p.m. The agenda will include the election of officers, receiving of reports and discussion of items concerning the historic Decker and Kimbro Evangelical Free Church cemeteries.
“Too many rural cemeteries around Elgin have become overgrown and in disrepair,” Jim Christianson said, organizer. “This association is determined this will not happen to the Kimbro and Decker Free Church cemeteries where many pioneers of those communities are buried.”
The association is an approved 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Interest earned each year takes care of maintenance for its historic gravesites.
