Bastrop inmate dies after 1 day in custody

BASTROP – An inmate carrying out his sentence in Bastrop County died last week while under the watch of facility staff, just one day after his arrival, Department of Justice reports said. Pelesasa Feiloaiga, 29, was found unresponsive at Federal Correctional Institution Bastrop July 18, at about 6:30 a.m., according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Responding employees initiated life-saving measures and emergency medical services were requested while efforts continued, the department said.

Feiloaiga was subsequently pronounced deceased by EMS personnel and the Federal Bureau of Investigation was reportedly notified. According to reports, the adult male was sentenced in the Western District of Texas to a 72-month-long sentence for carjacking. He had been in custody at FCI Bastrop since July 17, a low-security prison.

No employees or other incarcerated individuals were injured and at no time was the public in danger, according to reports.

Feiloaiga’s cause of death has not yet been released, and no further comment has been provided.
