The county’s groundwater conservationist specialists are offering a new scholarship opportunity for high school seniors.
T he Lo s t Pi ne s Groundwater Conservation District contest invites students to submit essays on critical water-related topics, aiming to raise awareness and encourage solutions for local water challenges.
Eligible high school seniors can write on one of three topics: the importance of water conservation in their community, the sustainability of groundwater in local water supplies amidst climate change or strategies for managing droughts and their impacts. Essays must highlight the significance of the chosen issue, discuss current challenges and propose practical solutions.
The top three essays will receive scholarships, with the firstplace winner earning $500, second place receiving $300 and third place getting $200.
The essay contest is open to all high school seniors living in Bastrop and Lee counties. Essays must be 500 to 1,000 words, submitted in PDF format by Nov. 22 to Claire Marks at cmarks@lostpineswater. org.
Winners will be announced Dec. 11 and recogni zed at the LPGCD Public Board Meeting on Dec. 18.
Submissions should be typed, double-spaced and formatted in Times New Roman, 12-point font, with 1-inch margins. Each essay must include a cover page with the title, student’s name, school and contact information. Originality is a must, according to the district, and students are encouraged to use and cite credible sources in MLA or APA format.
The LPGCD is committed to protecting and conserving groundwater resources in Bastrop and Lee counties. Through educational programs, community outreach and strategic resource management, the district works to ensure sustainable water supplies for current and future generations, representatives said.
