Local student earns elite honor society spot

An Elginite pursuing higher education has earned a prestigious spot in one of the nation’s oldest and most selective honor societies.

Sherelle Nolan was recent ly elected to membership in The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi at Texas State University.

E a c h ye a r , ap proximately 20,000 students, faculty, profe s sional staf f and alumni are inducted into Phi Kappa Phi, with memberships extended by invitation only.

Eligible candidates include the top 10% of seniors, 7.5% of juniors and graduate students in the top 10% of their class. University personnel and graduates who have achieved scholarly distinction may also qualify.

Founded in 1897 under the leadership of undergraduate student Marcus L. Urann, who had a desire to create a different kind of honor society, Phi Kappa Phi honors academic excellence across all disc iplines. Today, the society boasts chapters at over 300 institutions across the country, its territories and the Philippines, with a mission to “cultivate a community that celebrates and advances the love of learning.”
