The Elgin Wildcats varsity boys’ basketball team went 3-1 last week, improving their season record to 7-3.
After defeating Lake Belton 61-46 Dec. 3, the Wildcats went 2-1 at the Little River Academy Tournament Dec. 5-7.
Wildcats vs. Lake Belton
Elgin trailed 15-14 after the first quarter but took a 26-24 lead by halftime. The Wildcats exploded offensively in the third quarter, pushing their advantage to 44-34 before cruising to a victory over the tough Lake Belton team.
Junior forward David Penson and junior guard Tyson McFarlin each scored 12 points, while senior forward Bralon Rodriquez and senior guard Marcus Hickman both contributed 9.
Nelson Hayes led Lake Belton in scoring.
Little River Academy Tournament
Elgin’s tournament run began with a narrow 34-31 loss to Burges, marking their lowest-scoring game since regaining their full roster after football season. However, the Wildcats quickly rebounded with an 89-30 blowout win over Smithville, their highest scoring game of the season.
The Wildcats closed out the tournament with a dominant 67-33 victory over Hyde Park. Elgin averaged 62 points per game while holding their three opponents to 35.
Elgin will return to the court Thursday, Dec. 12, in the Marble Falls Tournament, running through Dec. 14.
