MCDADE — The Bulldogs have faced a tough start to the season, posting a 3-8 record through their first 11 games, but varsity basketball Head Coach Tavion Nunn hasn’t lost sight of his team’s potential.
McDade is coming off a challenging stretch, going winless at the Round Top-Carmine Tournament (0-4) and falling 59-48 to Calvert, Dec. 13.
“It’s a good group of kids,” Nunn said. “They’ve had a lot of opportunities to win some ballgames that just haven’t gone our way. Some of that comes down to gaining experience in those tough games, but they’re improving every day, and you can see the progress from game to game.”
Offensive production has been a major challenge for the Bulldogs, according to Nunn, averaging just 43.3 points per game.
“We’re trying to get some of our lead guards to say, ‘I need to get more aggressive when looking for my shot,’” Nunn added. “When we’re more aggressive, it opens things up for everyone else. We need our lead guards to attack downhill. When they do that, they’re a force to be reckoned with.”
This is Nunn’s first season at the team’s helm.
“They are coachable,” he said. “They’ve allowed me to come in and provide constructive criticism on some of the ways they’ve played and practiced. I’ve told them, ‘You guys can be great, but you have to have the mindset that we are going to be great every day.’” The Bulldogs will look to turn their season around with a matchup against Burton, Dec. 17, before heading into winter break. They will open district play against Granger Jan. 3.
