Filings open across county

Candidat e s int e rested in running for city council and school board positions have until Feb. 14 to submit their applications for the May 3 general election.

In Elgin, four council seats are up for election in wards 1, 2, 3 and 4. Arthur Gibson and YaLecia Love, current council members for Ward 1 and Ward 2, respectively, have already filed for reelection.

Elgin Independent School Dist r ict voters will choose board members for districts 4, 5 and 7 — currently held by Angie Edmon, Patrick Maass and Jennifer Culver. Bastrop residents will vote to fill the mayoral seat left empty after Lyle Nelson’s resignation earlier this month. The election will run in conjunction with council races for places 1 and 5, currently held by Cheryl Lee and John Kirkland.

Bastrop Independent School Dist r ict also has three seats open for election, with Chris M. Dillon, Place 5, Dr. Matthew Mix, Place 6, and Ashley Mutschink, Place 7, all seeking to retain.

In Smithville, City Council elections will decide who will fill places 1, 2 and 3, currently held by Tyrone Washington, Tom Etheredge and Jimmy Jenkins — and school district voters will cast ballots for board seats in places 5, 6 and 7, currently occupied by Josh Magden, Candice Parsons and Michael Hancock.

The last day to register to vote for the May election is April 3, early voting begins April 22.

Filings for these positions opened Jan. 15.
