The 2022-23 season for Elgin High School basketball is officially at its end, with the boys team’s last game set to take place on Tuesday, Feb. 14.

Although neither squad qualified for postseason contention, victories over county rival Bastrop last week helped ease the pain. For the girls team, it was their final contest of the season. They finished fifth in district with a 6-8 record, just two games back from the fourth and final playoff spot.

On Tuesday, Feb. 7, the Elgin boys executed on both ends of the court to win 62-51. On the same night, the Lady Wildcats traveled to Bastrop and left with a 47-39 victory thanks to dominant defense in the second half. After being tied 27-27 at the break, Elgin allowed just 12 points the rest of the way.

Later in the week, the boys hosted the Pflugerville Panthers in what was a thrilling, back-and-forth contest. The Wildcats nearly captured their second straight win, but the Panthers prevailed, 44-42.

Both Elgin squads have a lot to look forward to next season. The girls won three of their last four games, and talented players such as Hannah Howie and Jaylan Roberson will return.

The boys are loaded with young players who have potential to blossom into superstars. The team’s leading scorer Nathen Lewis will be back for his senior campaign in 2023-24. In addition, Amar Bermudez, Marcus Hickman and Noddyn Bailey gained valuable experience as sophomore starters and will only continue to improve.
