Filing for councils, boards ends Friday

Days remain for anyone who wants the opportunity to help lead their city or school district.

Council and school board seats will be up for grabs in Elgin, Smithville and Bastrop in the May 6 election. Interested candidates have until Friday, Feb. 17, at end of business day to apply for spots at any entity applicable for their residency.

McDade Independent School District will not have an election until 2024. Three trustee terms will expire next year.

Elgin

Current council members with terms expiring in May are Arthur Gibson II for Ward 1, Skyler Maldonado for Ward 2, Matthew Callahan for Ward 3 and Forest Lee Dennis for Ward 4.

At Elgin ISD, residents in northeast central sections of Elgin will have one of two seats on their ballot. Terms for Districts 1 and 2 are expiring, which are currently represented by Board President Byron Mitchell and board member Pete Pega, respectively.

Candidate applications are located at City Hall, 1311 Chestnut St. in Bastrop.

Places 3 and 4 on the Bastrop ISD will be on the ballot in May. Board President Billy Moore occupies Place 3, while Trustee Molly McClure sits in Place 4.

There are seven Bastrop ISD trustees, each elected at large to serve staggered three-year terms. Terms for approximately one-third of the board expire each year.
