Four Elgin High School student-athletes have accomplished their dream of playing at the collegiate level.
Cameron Hardy, Paiton Altmiller, Aubrey Gonzales and Dakota Brown officially signed their letter of intent on a postponed National Signing Day, Feb. 8. Hardy plays football, and the other three athletes are softball players.
Hardy signed with Southwestern College in Kansas. He thrived as the Wildcats’ middle linebacker throughout his playing career, racking up 91 total tackles, seven tackles for loss and two sacks in his two years on varsity. Hardy, a natural-born leader, earned first team all-district honors following his senior season.
Altmiller will continue her playing career at LeTourneau University in Longview. The four-year varsity starter has been a key piece to the Wildcats’ recent success, as they’ve finished second and first in district the past two seasons. Altmiller finished last season with a .348 batting average, 15 runs scored, 12 runs batted in, four stolen bases, a home run and .824 fielding percentage.
Gonzales signed with Galveston College, also having showcased excellence as a batter and fielder since being a member of the varsity team freshman year. In 2022, Gonzales had a .396 batting average, 12 runs scored, 12 RBIs off 21 hits, four stolen bases, a home run and fielding percentage of .857.
Brown will go on to play at the University of Dallas. Brown’s stellar defense has been integral to the team’s recent success, earning a .938 fielding percentage and 14 putouts last season. She also tallied six runs scored and four RBIs.
While Hardy’s playing career at EHS has come to a close, Altmiller, Gonzales and Brown have a chance to further solidify their legacies with softball season about to start. The Lady ‘Cats are scheduled to face Saginaw on Thursday, Feb. 16 for their first game.
