There was very little the Bears did wrong in House Park Stadium during their 69-7 rout of Austin McCallum on Thursday.
Bastrop scored on all but three possessions and added two defensive touchdowns to keep its perfect record intact Sept. 25. Now 5-0 with two District 11-5A Division II wins, the Bears enter their bye week averaging 60.4 points per game and have scored at least 48 in every contest.
The Bears had a balanced offensive attack. Quarterback Weston Nielsen completed 18 of 22 passes for 297 yards and four touchdowns, while senior running back Gary Jefferson Jr. carried 165 of the team’s 288 rushing yards with six receptions and four scores of his own.
Not to be outdone, Bastrop’s defense had one of its best showings of the season. Suffocating pressure limited McCallum — now 3-2, 1-1 in district — to just 198 yards gained. Two of the Bears’ three forced fumbles were also returned for touchdowns.
Bastrop scored at will in the first 12 minutes, reaching the back of the endzone in all three of its offensive possessions.
Nielsen threw scoring passes of 15 and 27 yards to Zac Wilkinson and Dallas Crescenzo, respectively, and Jefferson broke free for a 33-yard run to give the Bears a 21-0 first-quarter lead.
The Bears had a turnover on downs on their opening drive of the second quarter, and the Knights briefly closed the gap when Aiden Ilai capped a 14-play, 63-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown. But Jefferson answered with a 55-yard run, and Nielsen hit Crescenzo for a 63-yard score to put Bastrop ahead 35-7 at halftime.
Bastrop controlled the second half. Jefferson added a 13-yard touchdown reception and scored on an 18-yard run, defensive back Kennis Hunt returned a fumble 45 yards for a touchdown, Izaiah Regalado ran in from 15 yards and Samuel Diaz recovered a fumble in the end zone to cap the blowout.
Crescenzo finished with eight catches for 164 yards and two touchdowns, Wilkinson had three catches for 24 yards and a score, and Brett Carter added a 49-yard reception. Regalado carried eight times for 64 yards and one touchdown.
The Bears are off this week before hosting Pflugerville Connally Oct. 9, at Bastrop Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
