The Bastrop Lady Bears soccer team is hanging on for their playoff lives, and the boys have a glimmer of hope to reach the postseason.
Each squad went 1-1 in last week’s games. The boys team is tied for the fifth seed and is two games back from Hendrickson for the final playoff spot. The girls are clinging to the fourth seed, but Elgin is nipping at their heels as they’re only a half game back.
The Lady Bears played stifling defense in their Feb. 21 contest versus the Hendrickson Hawks. The score was tied 0-0 for most of the game, but the Lady Bears finally found the back of the net in the second half and hung on to win 1-0.
The Bastrop boys were also victorious in their road matchup against the Hawks. It was a tightly contested battle early on, each team trading goals to tie the score 1-1 going into the break.
The Bears’ offense then exploded in the second half. They scored three times while keeping Hendrickson’s offense in check. The strong finish propelled Bastrop to a 4-2 victory.
On Friday, Feb. 24, both squads struggled as they took on the East View Patriots. The boys team couldn’t generate enough offense and fell 2-0. East View had their way with the Lady Bears’ defense and cruised to a 6-2 win.
This week, the Bastrop teams will face Pflugerville Connally (Feb. 28) and Elgin (March 3). The games versus Elgin have huge playoff implications, especially for the Lady Bears.
