FRISCO – The Elgin Ladycats powerlifting team has been a force to be reckoned with all season long, and it finally paid off as they walked away with a ton of hardware from the state championship meet.
The Ladycats earned a second-place trophy as a team, and got to that point because of the outstanding individual effort from their competitors.
Starting off the meet was Elizabeth Nunez, who claimed second place in the 114-weight class to give her team a slight edge to start the meet. Nunez would lift a total of 750 pounds which helped her just squeak past the third-place finisher by five pounds.
Next was the 123-weight class for the Ladycats, and again they picked up another second-place finish. Maria Yanez lifted a total of 805 pounds to plant her flag firmly in second place at the meet and was only 80 pounds behind first place.
The momentum did not stop there though, in the 148-pound weight class the Ladycats had two competitors finishing inside the top 10. Ralyssa Enueshike and Jordin Seeger finished in third and ninth place respectively at the meet, enhancing their team point total in the standings.
Enueshike would lift a total of 945 pounds, and was only 25 pounds away from yet another second-place finish for the Ladycats. Her teammate, Seeger, lifted 800 pounds total and was 70 pounds from being right behind Enueshike in the rankings.
Dayla Palacios and Ainsley Orme would be tasked with handling the 165-weight class, and with a fifth and 11th place finish, the duo did their job. Palacios lifted 890 pounds, which was a perfect 100 pounds behind first place, while Orme lifted 835 pounds, and was 55 pounds away from catching her teammate in the rankings.
Last but certainly not least, in the 259-pound weight class, the Ladycats grabbed their first and only first place finish at the state meet. Nya Kirk Jones, who has consistently been the best lifter for the Ladycats, can now say she is the best lifter in the state.
In a dominating showing of power and strength, Jones lifted a truly outstanding 1,335 pounds. For perspective, that is 295 pounds more than the second-place finisher.
The first-place finish caps off an amazing season for Jones and her teammates as their efforts would award them with a second-place trophy along with four medals for their competitors.
