Wildcats take down Eagles in five innings

The Elgin Wildcats picked up a huge district win over the Cedar Creek Eagles last Tuesday, April 4, on their home field.

The Wildcats defeated the Eagles 10-0 before enjoying the Easter break, and it only took five innings to get it done.

The Eagles offense started the game strong, getting runners on base early with only one out on the board. Looking to open the scoring, the Eagles hit a ball in play, but unfortunately, the Wildcats were ready and executed a double play to perfection to get out of the inning.

Elgin would then be the team to open the scoring for the game. Austin Miller scored a run after an error in the infield.

The Eagles would get out of the inning, but the Wildcats' defense was equal to the task again getting three quick outs. The defense of both teams dominated the game until the bottom of the third inning, when the Wildcats extended their lead.

Justin Strong hit a triple, which would score a run to give his team a 2-0 lead. The Wildcats started to rally, looking to add multiple runs to their lead, but it was cut short by the Eagles' defense.

Elgin appeared to take this personally as their defense took the field with a little bit of a chip on their shoulder because their offensive momentum was stopped. The Wildcats came to play, and after a strikeout, ground out and a fly out they were back in the batter’s box.

The Eagles were not intimidated by the Wildcats and returned the favor of securing three quick outs to end the inning. The Wildcats were not going to give an inch and continued to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard in the fifth.

From there, Elgin finally broke through with the offensive surge they were looking for earlier in the game. The Wildcats scored eight runs to make it 10-0, where the game was called.

Miller delivered the final blow to Cedar Creek after digging in and finding a pitch he liked. With a runner already on base, Miller watched as the ball soared through the air and over the fence, effectively ending the game.

With a huge win under their belt the Wildcats continued their playoff push as they prepared to battle the Bastrop Bears April 11, on the road.
