Dr. Duron was the Elgin Independent School District Superintendent for 10 years before she retired, and Dr. Rueter is the present superintendent of Elgin ISD. Elgin Elementary interviewed both as one year retired and one year in the district.

Duron is loving retirement and being less stressed. She has more time to enjoy herself, but she’s still working. She currently works three different jobs, which include hiring superintendents and working for companies that help improve schools in Texas.

In retirement, she has started playing pickleball and golf. Some interesting things that Duron accomplished while she was superintendent include passing a big bond so Elgin can build more schools, starting the Early College program, and she was able to get millions of dollars in grants.

Rueter is feeling excited after her first year as superintendent, and feels like this is her most important job yet. As superintendent she is responsible for the entire district and she is taking this big job very seriously. When asked how she is making sure thousands of students stay safe, Rueter discussed the district’s huge system that makes sure not just anyone walks into our schools. The schools always make sure visitors and staff are safe to enter the buildings and are wearing a badge. Students said they are grateful that Rueter is the superintendent because she is worki n g hard to make our schools better.

Duron was inspired by her husband to become a superintendent because he was a superintendent as well, and Rueter was inspired by her dad who was a superintendent for over 50 years. Their favorite part about the job is the students and the people that they work with. Their biggest challenges are communication and managing misinformation on social media because sometimes it might not be true.

Their biggest hope for students is that they follow their dreams and learn to speak up for themselves. Duron was an excellent superintendent and students know Rueter will continue to be amazing as well.
