Lady Wildcats find rhythm, grand slam

TAYLOR — The Lady Wildcats varsity softball team posted three wins and two losses at the Taylor Tournament last weekend, pushing their overall record to 5-9.

Junior Bianco Galindo headlined the weekend by batting .818, smashing four total home runs and driving in nine.

Vs. Bastrop

Elgin opened with a narrow 7-5 setback to Bastrop, undone by a fiverun second inning from the Bears.

Freshman Jessica Hinnant doubled to bring home junior Kenna Tiner, and senior Gabriella Sandoval’s RBI single helped Elgin hold a brief 2-1 advantage.

Although Galindo’s three-run homer later cut the deficit to one, Bastrop secured the win behind six RBIs from Bryleigh Fawcett.

Vs. Holland

In the Hornets matchup, t he Lady Wi ldcat s couldn’t overcome an early surge by Holland, falling 9-2.

Elgin was limited to four hits, plating a run in the first when Galindo scored on an error and another in the third courtesy of senior Madison Weolh’s sacrifice groundout.

Vs. Anderson

Elgin bounced back in dominant style with a 10-2 victory over Anderson.

Galindo powered the offense by going 3-for-3, crushing two home runs and driving in five.

The Lady Wildcats capitalized on multiple errors and pulled away with five runs in the opening inning, then added five more over the next two frames.

Juniors Trinity Martinez and JaLiyah Price combined for four RBIs.

Vs. Rockdale

A five-run third inning propelled Elgin to a 6-4 triumph over the Tigers.

Down 4-0 entering the bottom of the second, the Lady Wildcats worked a bases-loaded walk to make it 4-1.

Sophomore Merinda Herring then delivered the decisive blow — a bases-clearing inside-thepark grand slam that put Elgin ahead to stay.

Junior pitcher Adriana Sandoval earned the win on the mound.

Vs. Bruceville-Eddy

In the tournament finale, Elgin overcame an early deficit to prevail 12-8.

Both teams traded big innings early, with the score knotted at 5-5 after the first.

Bruceville-Eddy jumped ahead with three runs in the second, but Elgin answered immediately, scoring five of its own to seize a 10-8 lead.

Martinez sparked the offense with a 2-for-2 day and four RBIs as the girls kept Bruceville-Eddy off the board for the rest of the contest.

Elgin opens district play against Hendrickson March 4 before traveling to Weiss Friday, March 7, at 7 p.m.
