LLANO — The Elgin Wildcats varsity baseball team wrapped up a productive weekend at the Llano Tournament with a 2-1-1 record, bolstered by seven RBIs from senior infielder Jack Grames.
The roster improved to three wins, one loss and one tie on the season and will return to action March 6-7 at the Battle by the Bay tournament.
Vs. Burnet
Elgin’s offense struggled in the opener, mustering just one hit in a 6-0 defeat to Burnet.
Senior Cason Nalle recorded the lone hit, while the opposition capitalized with five runs across the first two innings.
Grames took the pitching loss, allowing six runs on nine hits over six innings.
Vs. Wimberley JV
The Wi ldcat s rebounded to beat Wimberley’s JV squad 8-4, sparked by Nalle’s 2-for-4 performance with three RBIs.
Down 4-0 through four innings, Elgin erupted for four runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth, highlighted by RBI doubles from Nalle, senior Jalen Owens and Grames.
Mason Nunez earned the win on the mound.
Vs. Copperas Cove
Elgin and Copperas Cove played to a 4-4 tie, as neither team could break the deadlock in the final innings.
Owens pitched five frames, striking out eight and allowing four runs.
Makalia Hibbs and Fernando Ramirez each drove in a run for the Wildcats.
Vs. TMI-Episcopal
The boys closed out the tournament with a solid performance and 9-4 victory over TMI-Episcopal, powered by Grames’ three hits and five RBIs.
After TMI knotted the score at 4-4 in the fifth, the Wildcats quickly responded with five unanswered runs in the sixth.
Grames capped the outburst by clearing the bases with a triple.
