A special birthday celebration at the Elgin Public Library kicked off a weeklong literary initiative with a free book giveaway and guest reading.
The library hosted its Dr. Seuss birthday event March 1 to launch Read Across America Week, in partnership with the Elgin Independent School District’s Elgin Reads program.
In collaboration with Friends of the Elgin Library — and with funding support from the library and the Texas Methodist Foundation — the event distributed hundreds of titles from the beloved children’s author. “ The Cat in the Hat ” emerged as a fan favorite, attendees said. Elgin ISD is also providing every student in grades K-6 with a book as part of the week’s programming.
Superintendent Jana Rueter served as the special guest for a noon reading of “The Cat in the Hat,” drawing a packed audience of students and parents.
“Of course, she did a fantastic job, being a former teacher. The kids really loved it, and we got plenty of thanks,” said Laura Stough with Friends of the Elgin Library.
The celebration is part of the library’s ongoing Book Bus program, which distributes thousands of free books at community events throughout the year.
Last year’s goal of 1,200 books was surpassed, with more than 4,000 distributed, according to the library. Organizers expect even greater success this year, anticipating about 3,800 donated by week’s end.
“It ’s a great time. The goal is to expand home libraries and promote literacy all over,” Stough added. Adding to the festive atmosphere, library employee Kelley McEwen made a memorable appearance as the Cat in the Hat itself.
