MANOR – The Elgin High School boys varsity soccer team under Head Coach Eduardo Lerma continued its start to the 2024 season last week as the Wildcats competed at the Manor Showcase tournament against Klein Collins High School, Needville High School and Gonzales The Wildcats lost 2-0 in the tourney opener to 6A Klein Collins and then were edged 2-1 by Needville with junior Teo Ferrusca scored the lone goal for Elgin.

GIDDINGS – The Elgin High School and Smithville High School boys and girls varsity powerlifting teams opened their 2024 season Saturday, Jan. 6 at the Giddings Invitational meet with athletes competing in squat, bench press and deadlift.

The Elgin High School boys varsity basketball team played against very tough 5A-District 23 opponents this past week as the Wildcats were edged at home Jan. 3 by Pflugerville Connally High School and went on the road Jan. 5 and fell to Georgetown High School.

BASTROP – The Cedar Creek High boys varsity basketball squad continued 5A-District 23 action this past week as the Eagles hosted Georgetown East View High School and traveled to take on Pflugerville Connally High School.

SMITHVILLE – The Smithville High School girls varsity basketball team stayed in the thick of the current playoff race Tuesday, Jan. 2 when the Lady Tigers picked up a pivotal 56-53 victory over the Lady Buffaloes of Giddings High School.

FORT WORTH – Bastrop County was well represented Friday, Jan. 5 as Bastrop High School, Cedar Creek High School and Smithville High School all competed in the UIL Spirit State Championships held at the Fort Worth Convention Center in their respective classes.

SMITHVILLE – The annual Bastrop County Martin Luther King Jr. Walk celebrates and remembers the life and impact of the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., the chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement, which protested racial discrimination in federal and state law.

BASTROP – The Bastrop Museum & Visitor Center has been named “nonprofit of the year,” while continuing their devotion to preservation and education with a new special exhibition.
