The first leader for Elgin’s latest elementary school has been named.
Megan Wehrle was selected as principal for Harvest Ridge Elementary, the district’s fourth elementary school, set to open Aug. 19 for the 2024 school year.
“Ms. Wehrle will be able to establish a student-centered campus culture of providing engaging and innovative experiences for all students, so that they are provided choice and opportunity for their future,” said Superintendent of Schools Jana Rueter.
Wehrle previously worked as a first-grade teacher in Austin Independent School District and as a first-grade and fourth-grade teacher at Elgin Elementary, where she would later become assistant principal and principal. Wehrle is currently in her second year as principal at Elgin Elementary, her 12th year in education.
Wehrle graduated with a bachelor’s degree in applied learning and development and a master’s degree in educational leadership and policy from the University of Texas at Austin.
Michelle Martinez will replace Wehrle at Elgin Elementary School, leaving her current position as principal of Pflugerville ISD’s Parmer Lane Elementary.
“I am incredibly excited and grateful for the opportunity to join Elgin ISD as the new principal of Elgin Elementary School,” Martinez said. “I look forward to bringing my passion for education to this community and working collaboratively with colleagues, students and families to create a positive and enriching learning environment for all.”
Martinez previously served as principal for Antonio Bruni Elementary in Laredo from 2019-2023, where she was recognized as 2019-2020 Laredo ISD New Principal of the Year. She has also been an assistant principal, librarian and elementary school teacher.
She holds a master’s degree from Sam Houston State University and a bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M International University.
Harvest Ridge Elementary is currently under construction in the Harvest Ridge subdivision near Elgin High School. It was designed to accommodate up to 900 students, the first of two new elementary schools constructed through the voter-approved 2021 Elgin ISD Bond.
