Study to explore toll expansion

Efforts to extend the U.S. 290 toll road east into Bastrop County are gaining momentum.

Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority leaders recently voted to partner with the county on a $20 million study, examining design and environmental impacts of a proposed 13mile extension up to Texas 95 in Elgin. The toll currently stretches just west of Manor.

Officials said the study will focus strictly on design and environmental review, with no construction authorized at this stage.

The study is expected to outline future steps, including potential construction phases, which would require separate approval and funding.

Earlier versions of the plan faced local opposition, but officials said the current approach is aimed at long-term mobility needs, easing congestion amid the area’s rapid population growth.

Because CTRMA’s authority ends at the Bastrop County line, commissioners must also approve the partnership.

The Bastrop County Commissioners Court met after press time April 14.
