The Bastrop Bears varsity baseball team earned a sweep over the Crockett Cougars, shutting them out in both games of their district series. The Bears opened with a 7-0 win on Tuesday, April 8, and followed it up with a 6-0 victory on Friday, April 11.
Game one
Bastrop came out hot in the series opener, plating four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Triston St. Clair drove in the first run with an RBI single, followed by a run scored on a walk and a two-RBI single from Lathan Bennett to make it 4-0.
After two scoreless innings, the Bears extended their lead to 5-0 on an RBI triple from Jackson Phillips. Two Cougar errors in the sixth allowed Bastrop to tack on two more insurance runs, sealing the 7-0 shutout.
Cooper Voigt earned the win on the mound, tossing three scoreless innings with seven strikeouts. Ben Vaquero pitched the final four innings in relief, striking out 11 without allowing a hit. Bennett led the team at the plate with two RBIs.
Game two
The second game was a pitcher’s duel early, with both teams scoreless through three innings. Bastrop broke through in the top of the fourth with two runs, sparked by an RBI triple from Bennett and a run-scoring groundout to go up 2-0.
The Bears added three more in the fifth. Val Regalado ripped an RBI triple, and St. Clair followed with a triple of his own. Bastrop capitalized on a Cougar error before Bob Gorman added another RBI triple to extend the lead to 5-0.
Frankie Andrada drove in the final run with an RBI single in the sixth to make it 6-0.
Regalado picked up the win on the mound, throwing four scoreless innings with seven strikeouts. Francisco Arriaga and Andrada combined to close the game and secure the shutout.
With the series sweep, Bastrop improved to 12-12 overall and 7-1 in district play. The Bears return to action against Anderson on Tuesday, April 15, before hosting the Trojans to close the series on Thursday, April 17, at 7 p.m.
