A dispute between business neighbors leaves the land damaged

Jim Junior Smith, 98, of Round Rock, went to be with our Heavenly Father Sunday, Aug. 6, 2023. Jim was born Feb. 22, 1925, to Meek and Laura (Poston) Smith in Superior, West Virginia.

Lucy Sandifer Woodall, 76, of Cedar Creek, passed away July 30, 2023.

My grandmother was Gladys Smith, who was a waitress at The City Cafe in the early 1940s. Between the lunch and dinner runs, she would sit in one of the big windows facing Main Street and smoke a cigarette.

The First Petition of the Lord’s Prayer, “Hallowed be Thy name,” sounds obscure to our modern ears, but it simply means, “Dear Father in heaven, let Your name be hallowed – let Your name be kept holy.” We can’t make God’s name holy by our prayer; it’s already holy in itself, as we pray in Psalm 103, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me bless His holy name!” So in the Lord’s Prayer we are asking that God would cause us here on earth to keep His holy name holy. On the other hand, it is possible for us to treat His name as unholy, so we are praying that He would prevent His name from being profaned or defiled among us. God’s name is holy in itself, but when it is misused by people, it’s like taking a beautiful diamond ring and covering it with mud; the diamond is still precious, but its beauty and value cannot be seen by others because it is covered by the profane mud.

An unprecedented number of child care centers are expected to close across the state as pandemic relief funding ends, the Texas Standard reported. A survey conducted by the Texas Association for the Education of Young Children of about 1,600 child care programs indicated 44% were likely to close their doors without additional funding. Federal pandemic relief funds ended for most centers in June.

Elgin High School, Bastrop High School and Cedar Creek High School all start football practice this week while Smithville High School and McDade High School enter their second week.

Bastrop County has regular-season volleyball games back in action this week as the Elgin High School, Bastrop High School, Cedar Creek High School, Smithville High School and McDade High School varsity programs are ready to compete.

Local program’s summer opera announced

BASTROP – The 76th annual Bastrop homecoming and rodeo kicks off this week, bringing tradition, entertainment and donations to the city.

Through advancements in genealogy tech and perseverance decades later, the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office was able to identify and provide closure for the family of Kathy Ann Smith, whose body was found in 1979 near Elgin.
