Jim Junior Smith

Jim Junior Smith, 98, of Round Rock, went to be with our Heavenly Father Sunday, Aug. 6, 2023. Jim was born Feb. 22, 1925, to Meek and Laura (Poston) Smith in Superior, West Virginia.

He moved to Austin, Texas in 1968, and started his own professional painting company, Smith Painting. While in Austin, he also met his “Sweets,” Mary. After a short courtship, the two Wednesday, Dec. 7, 1974. In 1978, Jim and Mary moved to Elgin.

Jim was a talented painter and enjoyed restoring historical items. The Heritage Society of Austin recognized him in 1984, for his significant contributions to historic preservation projects. Jim had a green thumb, which was apparent from the harvest of vegetables he had each year. He also enjoyed watching football, especially the Texas Longhorns.

After Jim retired, he spent his time traveling with his Sweets across the continental United States in their travel trailer. Lake Medina was one of their favorite spots in Texas. They traveled there and hosted family at the lake every summer until 2012.

Jim was preceded in death by his both his parents, Meek and Laura Smith; sons, Jimmy Huston Smith and Dennis Wayne Smith; daughter, Patricia Lynn Henning; five sisters, as well as other many exceptional loved ones.

He is survived by his Sweets of 48 years, Mary; son, Randy Smith and wife Patty; daughter, Pam and husband, Steven Kovar; stepdaughter, Diane Stacks; stepson, Larry Stacks and wife Diane; three sisters; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and numerous extended family and dear friends.

Jim was laid to rest during a private graveside service at Elgin Cemetery. Friends and family will gather for a celebration of Jim’s life Monday, Aug. 14, at 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Elgin, with the Reverend Jason Huddleston presiding. Memorial contributions can be made in Jim’s memory to the First Baptist Church of Elgin.
