The Bastrop Bears soccer team is off to a blazing start.
After going 4-0 to win the Iron Horse Invitational championship last week, the Bears possess an 8-0 record and have dominated most of their competition.
Bastrop opened up the tournament with a convincing 5-0 victory over Austin’s Harmony School of Excellence. The score was tight after the first half, as the Bears clung to just a 1-0 advantage. But they exploded with an offensive onslaught in the second half to secure the win.
Bastrop’s ensuing game against the Manor New Tech Titans was a similar story. After leading 1-0 for the majority of the contest, the Bears scored a flurry of goals and cruised to a 7-1 victory.
The Bears were tested and pushed to the brink in their next game versus the Marble Falls Mustangs. Bastrop held a 2-0 lead after the first half, but the Mustangs found their groove offensively in the second half and scored twice. The Bears cashed in a critical late-game goal, though, and won 3-2.
Finally, Bastrop took on the Temple Wildcats in the championship game. Both teams looked evenly matched early on, trading punches to tie the score 1-1 halfway through. Once again, the Bears showcased their explosiveness on the offensive end while clamping down defensively. They scored three goals in the second half and shut out the Wildcats to lock up a 4-1 win.
The Bears have now outscored their opponents 51-9 so far this season. They will battle Harker Heights (Jan. 17) and Lake Belton (Jan. 20) this week as they hope to keep their undefeated record alive. Both games start at 7:15 p.m.
