Smithville’s girls and boys basketball squads are currently eligible for postseason contention.
After last week’s games, the Lady Tigers rank third in their district with a 4-2 record. The boys’ 2-2 district record is good enough to put them at the number four spot in the standings.
On Tuesday, Jan. 10, both teams dismantled the Austin Achieve Polar Bears. The Lady Tigers kept their foot on the gas pedal from the opening tip to the final buzzer. They were sharp on both ends of the court and coasted to an easy 66-18 road victory.
The Smithville boys also enjoyed a lopsided win on their home court. They were dynamic on offense, making it rain from all over the court. They applied consistent pressure on the defensive end as well. The Tigers never gave the Polar Bears any signs of life, winning 64-39.
Later in the week, Jan. 10, both squads took on the Taylor Ducks. The girls were ultimately defeated, 58-44, against a solid Ducks team who has now won three straight games.
Sophomore guard Arabella Gutierrez provided a spark offensively for the Lady Tigers, and Ladonije Lewis forced a multitude of steals. But the Ducks’ execution was too much for Smithville to overcome.
Meanwhile, the boys were victorious in their matchup versus Taylor. It was a thrilling battle as both teams went back and forth throughout. The Tigers made enough plays, however, and won 59-54. It was Smithville’s third straight victory.
The boys and girls will face off against heated rivals, Caldwell (Jan. 17) and La Grange (Jan. 20), this week. The boys will be at home for both games while the Lady Tigers go on the road.
