One man’s dream was remembered in Elgin on his namesake day.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day was commemorated with the 34th Annual Walk for Peace, Justice, and Equality. Many residents descended onto downtown Elgin to march through town to remember MLK Jr.
The Bastrop County Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Commission presents the annual walk and celebration. The event rotates yearly between host cities in the county.
“These are all volunteers,” said Mayor Theresa McShan of the group. “They’re taking time out of their day and out of their pocketbooks.”
Elgin’s march began at Veterans Memorial Park and headed through town to Booker T. Washington Elementary School. The walk included a stop at the Elgin Black Icons Mural. A program followed at the school gymnasium.
Martin Luther King Jr. is considered one of the most prominent civil rights leaders of the mid-20th century. He was assassinated in 1968, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day was established throughout the U.S. in 1971.
