SMITHVILLE — A suspect in a highway shooting last summer is in custody.
U.S. Marshals assisted the Bastrop Police Department Jan. 12 with the arrest of Darrian James Chandler, 25, of Smithville. He is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and deadly conduct in regards to gunfire on S.H. 71.
According to reports, a driver called 911 June 7, 2022, to say that they had witnessed a man in a vehicle in front of them in the 500 block of S.H. 71 fire four to six shots into another vehicle. Two bullets struck a female occupant of the other vehicle. The male shooter fled the area, and the woman was treated at a nearby hospital.
An investigation led to Chandler being named a suspect. The Bastrop Police Department requested the help of the U.S. Marshal’s Office Lone Star Fugitive Task Force. Marshals recentlylearned that Chandler was residing on Webb Street in Smithville, so the Task Force approached and surrounded the house last Thursday.
Chandler surrendered and was transported to the Bastrop County Jail. He awaits further judicial proceedings.
