Watermelon queens prepare for landmark festival

MCDADE – The Mc-Dade Watermelon Festival will be host to the 75th annual queen’s revue June 24 in preparation for the milestone celebration at 143 Bastrop St.

Carried out on the festival grounds’ pavilion, queens will be judged for the tiny tot, junior and teen categories. Set to begin their reign at the watermelon day parade, July 8, queens will represent the McDade festival float at nearly 20 other central Texas town gatherings.

Queens will also receive scholarship benefits, upkeeping the festivals tradition of donation.

After the town’s school burned down 75 years ago, the inaugural Mc-Dade watermelon festival was held to raise money for furniture and school construction. To this day, all funds raised during the event are funneled back into the community via scholarships for graduating seniors, grants for teachers and other non-profit youth organizations.

Watermelon queen candidates are from the immediate McDade area, with winners to be selected by ballot; one ballot per person sold at one dollar each. Sales to start on revue day at 6:30 p.m.

The 75th incarnation of the celebration will also host a barbecue cook-off, car show, 5K run, seed spitting contest, mower rodeo, washer pitching tournament and a slew of other games and events. Interested parties can visit https://www.mcdadetexas. com/home.html to learn more.
