Elgin High School’s boys soccer team is starting to heat up.

The Wildcats went 2-0 in last week’s contests, outsourcing their opponents 7-0. Coach Eduardo Lerma’s squad continues to improve as they now possess a 4-2-2 record and have won three straight.

On Tuesday, Jan. 17, the Elgin boys thumped Manor New Tech on their home field by a score of 4-0. Jose Ferrusca and Guillermo Hernandez hit their groove offensively, each scoring two goals.

Their next game on Jan. 20 against the Giddings Buffaloes was a similar story. The Wildcats went on the road and left with a 3-0 victory. Fabian Soberano, Luis Hernandez and David Macedo all found the back of the net.

The Wildcat defense was especially dominant in their two outings last week. Goalkeepers David Macedo and Uriel Cienfuegos, along with a slew of other defenders, have been a nightmare for opposing offenses as of late.

The Elgin girls team, however, struggled last week after getting off to a scorching, undefeated start. The Lady Wildcats went 0-2-1 in the Georgetown tournament but are still in good position with a 5-2-1 record.

On Thursday, Jan. 19, Elgin found themselves in a defensive slugfest versus the Cornerstone Christian Warriors. Neither team was able to cash in a goal, and the contest ended in a 0-0 tie.

The following day, the Lady Wildcats battled the Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial Eagles in a nail-biting matchup. Maria Yanez booted in the first goal of the game to give Elgin a 1-0 lead. The Lady Wildcats maintained a 1-0 advantage as the first half came to a close.

The Eagles responded in the second half. They began hitting their stride on offense while playing tough defense. The Eagles ultimately prevailed to win 2-1.

Next up, Elgin played a formidable Glenn Grizzlies team. The Lady Wildcats fell behind early and never seized momentum. The Grizzlies expanded on their 4-0 first half lead and came out with a 6-0 victory.

The Lady Wildcats will look to bounce back this week as they begin district play. They will host East View on Jan. 24 and travel to face Pflugerville Connally on Jan. 27. Both contests start at 7:30 p.m.

The Elgin boys will play the same teams on the same nights, except they will be on the road Tuesday and at home on Friday.
